required reading: Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here"

Lewis' book, from 1935, depicts a rightwing takeover of America and the destruction of our democracy, driven by corrupt industries, goon squads, and mobs of wingnuts.

What is happening in America right now reads like the first chapter of the book.

Lewis was reminding us how lucky we were in 1933. In that year two countries, reeling from the effects of the Depression, faced fateful choices for their new leadership. Within a matter of weeks, America handed power to Roosevelt, while Germany handed power to...well, you know who. That very easily could have been us with the dictatorship.

And it could happen here. It may be happening already.
