Why Franken matters

Senate Republicans are planning to block the nomination of the new Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. Not because there’s anything wrong with the nominee: a Republican Senator from Utah is angry that Obama has restricted oil and gas leases in Utah, so he is indulging in some payback.

Why is this childish nonsense even possible? Because the Democrats’ 60th Senator, Franken, is still stuck in court, not on the Senate floor.
